Perms Today: What a Modern Perm Is, Costs & Who It Suits

A perm chemically adds lasting curl or wave to your hair by reshaping its internal bonds around rods. It's permanent on the hair that's treated (only new growth grows in straight), and modern perms range from defined curls to soft, beachy waves. Perms aren't what they used to be

Say “perm” and a lot of people picture tight '80s curls. Today's perms are a different thing. Depending on the rod size and technique, a stylist can give you anything from defined curls to loose, natural waves and soft volume. The chemistry is the same idea your grandmother's perm used: a solution breaks the bonds that hold your hair's shape, the hair is wrapped to the curl you want, and a neutraliser locks the new shape in. But the styling has moved on enormously.

It's permanent on the hair that's treated. The curl doesn't wash out; it grows out, with your natural texture coming in at the roots over a few months. For straight or limp hair that wants lasting body without daily heat styling, it's a genuinely satisfying option.

The one thing that decides everything: candidacy

Here's where we'll be firm, because it matters. A perm is strong chemistry, and it does not play well with hair that's already been through a lot. Bleached, heavily highlighted, over-processed, or previously relaxed or chemically straightened hair is usually a red flag. Combining those chemistries is how hair ends up breaking. Damaged, fragile hair and irritated scalps are out too.

This is why a real perm starts with a consultation and a strand test, not a booking. A good stylist will ask about every chemical service you've had and will tell you honestly if your hair isn't a candidate. If we say no, it's because we'd rather lose the booking than damage your hair, and we'd point you to gentler ways to get movement instead.

Is it safe? And does it damage hair?

On healthy hair, with a skilled stylist, a perm is manageable and the results last. The honest risks are breakage and scalp irritation, and they climb steeply on compromised or chemically conflicting hair, which loops right back to candidacy.

On the bigger health question people sometimes ask: that 2022 NIH study which linked frequent chemical straightener use to higher uterine-cancer risk specifically found no such link for perms. So perms didn't carry that signal. As with any chemical service, we still ask pregnant or nursing clients to check with their doctor first, simply as a sensible precaution.

Who it's great for, and the aftercare

Perms shine on healthy hair that's straight or limp and wants lasting curl, wave, or volume. And yes, they're popular with men too, for adding texture and body. The trade-off is commitment: it's permanent, there's a regrowth line over time, and the first 48 hours are a set window where you don't wash, tie, or fuss with the hair. After that, gentle, moisturising, sulphate-free, curl-supporting products keep the curl happy, and most people come back every few months as new growth appears.
