Keratin Treatments: What They Do, What They Cost & Are They Safe

A keratin treatment is a semi-permanent smoothing service that works keratin into the hair and seals it with heat to cut frizz, soften curl, and shrink your styling time for about three to five months. It doesn't straighten your hair forever; your natural texture returns as it grows out. The one thing genuinely worth understanding before you book is the formula's safety profile, which we cover honestly below.

What a keratin treatment actually does

A keratin treatment smooths the hair rather than chemically straightening it for life. We work a keratin formula through your hair, dry it, and seal it section by section with a flat iron. That flattens the cuticle, so frizz drops, shine comes up, and your morning blow-dry gets dramatically shorter. For a lot of clients, that last part is the whole reason they come.

It's semi-permanent, which is the key word. Unlike Japanese straightening, it doesn't permanently rearrange your hair's structure. It softens and relaxes curl while it lasts, then fades gently over three to five months with no harsh line, so your natural pattern always comes back. It's one of the most-requested things we do for coarse, frizzy, humidity-prone hair, and Oakville summers give us plenty of that.

Is a keratin treatment safe? The honest answer on formaldehyde

This is the part worth slowing down for, and we'd rather give you the real picture than a reassuring shrug.

Many classic keratin formulas contain a formaldehyde “donor” (methylene glycol) that releases small amounts of formaldehyde when heated. That's the source of the fumes some salons are known for. Formaldehyde-free formulas exist, usually built on glyoxylic acid, and we prefer them, though it's worth knowing a few can still release trace amounts when heated, and there have been rare medical case reports linking some glyoxylic-acid products to kidney issues. The honest summary: “formaldehyde-free” is a formula-by-formula thing, not a magic label, and good ventilation matters either way. (For the record, the US FDA has proposed restricting formaldehyde in these products but, as of 2026, has not finalized a ban.)

Then there's the question people really want answered: does this cause cancer? Here's the actual evidence, plainly. A large 2022 study from the US National Institutes of Health followed about 33,000 women and found that those who used chemical hair straighteners frequently (more than four times a year) had roughly double the risk of uterine cancer. That sounds frightening until you see the absolute numbers: the risk went from about 1.6% of non-users to about 4% of frequent users by age 70. The study looked at straighteners broadly, did not prove formaldehyde was the cause, and found no link at all for hair dyes, bleach, highlights, or perms.

What we take from that, and what we'd tell you in the chair. This isn't a reason to panic, but it is a reason to be sensible. We favour well-ventilated, formaldehyde-free formulas, we don't over-treat, and if you're pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive, we'll ask you to clear it with your doctor first rather than make that call for you.

Who keratin is right for, and who it isn't

Keratin shines on thick, coarse, frizzy, or unruly hair that takes forever to style, and it's lovely on humidity-prone hair. It usually plays well with colour, and men with wavy or coarse hair get just as much out of it as anyone.

It's a weaker fit for very fine hair, where a heavy formula can leave you flat; for already pin-straight hair, where there's little to gain; and for hair that's genuinely damaged (snapping, over-bleached, fragile), where we'd repair first with a bond treatment like K18 and revisit smoothing once the hair is stronger. Honestly, if your hair doesn't need it, we'll say so rather than book you in.

How long it lasts, what it costs, and the cure window

At Backstage, Keratin Straightening starts at $350 and runs a couple of hours or more depending on your length and density. Results last roughly three to five months (formaldehyde-free formulas can run a little shorter), fading gradually rather than all at once.

One practical thing to plan for with classic formulas: the first 48 to 72 hours are a “cure” window. That means no washing, no tying it up, no clips, no heavy sweating. Anything that dents or wets the hair can disturb the set. Some modern systems have relaxed this and allow same-day washing, so we'll tell you exactly which applies to your formula. After that, the rule that protects your investment is simple: sulphate-free, salt-free products, and skip the chlorine.
