Bond Repair for Hair: What It Is, How It Works & Whether You Need It
Bond repair is the family of treatments that rebuild the internal bonds holding your hair together: the ones colour, bleach, perms, and heat break apart. Instead of coating the surface like a conditioner, bond builders such as Olaplex and K18 reconnect structure inside the strand, restoring strength and reducing breakage. It’s most worth it for coloured, bleached, or damaged hair; healthy hair needs it far less.
What “bond repair” actually means
Your hair is keratin protein, and that protein is held in shape by bonds. Two kinds matter most: the disulfide bonds, which act like cross-links giving hair its strength, and the long protein chains that run the length of each strand. Bleaching, colouring, perming, relaxing, and hot tools all break these bonds. Break enough of them and hair turns weak, porous, stretchy, and quick to snap.
Bond repair treatments do something a conditioner can't: they reconnect those broken bonds inside the hair. That's the whole idea behind the category, and it's why bond builders became the most in-demand treatments in salons over the last decade. They rebuild structure rather than just smoothing the outside.
The two big names work differently
Almost every bond-repair conversation comes down to Olaplex and K18, and the useful thing to know is that they don't do the same job.
Olaplex rebuilds the disulfide cross-links, and it's especially good mixed into colour or bleach, where it protects your hair's strength while the chemistry works. K18 reconnects the lengthwise protein chains, works in about four minutes with no rinse, and shines on hair that's already over-processed and mushy. They target different parts of the same structure, which is exactly why a lot of damaged hair benefits from both. (We've written a full K18-vs-Olaplex comparison if you want to go deeper, plus dedicated guides to each.)
Bond repair is not a protein treatment
This trips people up. Old-style protein treatments work differently: they deposit protein to patch damaged hair, and used too often they cause “protein overload,” where hair goes stiff, straw-like, and brittle. Bond repair rebuilds bonds without that surface build-up, which is a big reason it's largely overtaken heavy protein treatments for everyday damage. Protein still has its place for severe, acute damage, but it has to be balanced carefully with moisture. If your hair already feels stiff and snappy despite all the “repair” you're doing, you may be over-proteinised, not under-treated.
Do you actually need it?
Honestly, it depends on what you put your hair through. If you colour, bleach, or heat-style regularly, bond repair is one of the best-value things you can add, because it protects the investment you're making in your hair. If your hair is healthy and you mostly leave it alone, you'll notice far less, and we won't pretend otherwise. Bond repair also won't regrow hair, thicken it, or rescue split ends; those need different help, and split ends need scissors.
How we use it at Backstage
In the salon, the bookable forms of bond repair are our K18 treatment (from $60) and Olaplex, which we most often build into colour for protection. If you're not sure which your hair needs, or whether it needs one at all, that's a normal thing to ask at a consultation. We'll look at your hair's strength and porosity and give you a straight answer, including “your hair's in good shape, save your money.”
Understanding Hair weakened by colour, bleach, or heat, and confusion about which “repair” treatment actually helps.
Bond repair reconnects the broken internal bonds (disulfide cross-links and protein chains) that chemical and heat damage cause. Olaplex and K18 are the two leading systems and target different bonds, so they complement each other. Bond repair is distinct from protein treatments, which can cause overload if overused. It strengthens existing hair; it doesn't grow, thicken, or un-split it.
Safe Home Steps, Right Now
- Match the fix to the problem: weakness and breakage need bond repair; dryness needs moisture; split ends need a trim.
- If you colour or bleach, ask for a bond-builder in the service; it protects strength while you process.
- Stiff, brittle hair that's had lots of “treatments” may be over-proteinised; switch to moisture and see.
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo and a heat protectant to keep the strength you rebuild.
- Not sure what your hair needs? A consultation beats guessing in the product aisle.
